Siemens acquires Altair: what changes for you and Althima

Updated on: [August 19, 2026].

Altair was acquired by Siemens in 2025. This does not mean the technology has disappeared, nor that Althima’s customers need to switch platforms. On the contrary, the software is now part of the Siemens ecosystem, ensuring project continuity and opening up new possibilities for integration with artificial intelligence.

In summary

●    Siemens completed the acquisition of Altair in March 2025.
●    The software remains available and continues to be supported.
●    The technology is now part of the Siemens portfolio, through Simcenter and Siemens Xcelerator.
●    Althima remains an official Siemens partner in Portugal.
●    There is no need to switch platforms or interrupt ongoing projects.

What happened

Altair Engineering was founded in 1985 in Troy, Michigan (USA), by James Scapa, George Christ, and Mark Kistner. Over four decades, it became a global leader in computer-aided engineering, notably with the HyperWorks suite, which is used for structural analysis, computational fluid dynamics, multiphysics simulation, and product optimization.

In October 2024, Siemens AG announced an agreement to acquire Altair for approximately $10 billion. The deal was finalized in March 2025, combining Altair’s capabilities in mechanical and electromagnetic simulation, high-performance computing (HPC), data science, and artificial intelligence with the Siemens Xcelerator platform. The Altair software you already know has not ceased to exist; the HyperWorks suite, for example, has been integrated into Siemens’ Simcenter portfolio. This acquisition is a cornerstone of Siemens' "ONE Tech Company" program, a growth strategy centered on software, products with integrated artificial intelligence, and sustainability.

Why did Siemens acquire Altair?

Siemens sought to strengthen its leadership in industrial software and artificial intelligence by adding Altair’s portfolio—strong in simulation, optimization, and HPC—to the Siemens Xcelerator ecosystem. The integration also expands Siemens' Digital Twin capabilities, enabling more precise product simulation prior to physical production.

Has Altair changed its name?

Technically, Altair has ceased to exist as an independent company. Altair is now a wholly-owned Siemens brand, and Siemens is the designated provider. The "Altair" name hasn't disappeared entirely, though it hasn't been retained everywhere: Siemens keeps "Altair" in the names of two products—Altair One and Altair Units. In other cases, the name has changed completely: the HyperWorks suite has become part of Simcenter, while HPCWorks and RapidMiner have dropped the "Altair" prefix.

It remains the same calculation engine and core functionality you already know, but is now marketed under a new brand and backed by increased investment in development.

What changes for Althima customers

For those working with us on numerical simulation, structural analysis, or stress analysis, the transition boils down to the following:

What stays the same

●    You continue using the same software for your simulation projects.
●    Regular updates continue to be provided.
●    Technical support continues to be provided by Althima.

Current licenses remain valid. What is changing

●    The provider, which is now Siemens (Altair Engineering ceases to exist as an independent entity).
●    The product roadmap, now aligned with Siemens Xcelerator.
●    The level of investment in artificial intelligence applied to simulation.
Some product names, such as Altair One or Altair Units, retain "Altair" in their name because Siemens itself continues to designate them that way. Others have changed their names completely: the HyperWorks suite has been integrated into Simcenter, and HPCWorks and Rapidminer no longer use the "Altair" prefix. If you encounter references to Altair as an independent company or provider in older content on our site, in newsletters, or in past webinar titles, it is because they were published prior to this transition; we are progressively updating these mentions.

Quick definitions

●    Altair. Industrial simulation software company founded in 1985; acquired by Siemens in 2025.
●    Siemens Xcelerator. Siemens’ digital platform that brings together industrial software, automation, and engineering solutions.
●    Simcenter. A family of Siemens solutions for simulation and virtual testing, now integrating Altair technology as well.
●    CAE. Computer-Aided Engineering; used to validate products before production.
●    Digital Twin. A digital replica of a product or process, used to simulate its behavior before it physically exists.

Frequently asked questions

1. Was Altair purchased by Siemens?

Yes. Altair is now a wholly-owned Siemens brand. The company was acquired in March 2025, and its technology has been integrated into Siemens' industrial software portfolio.

2. Will I continue to receive support for my current projects?

Yes. Support and licensing continuity remain in place; the change is in branding, not in the product or service itself.

3. Why do I still see "Altair" on some pages or in search results?

Because there is still legacy content—both ours and from third parties—published before the acquisition was finalized. We are progressively updating this content.

4. Where can I find official details about the acquisition??

In the official Siemens announcement regarding the completion of the Altair acquisition. About this article

This article was written by the team at Althima—a Portuguese engineering firm and official Siemens partner—which implements this product simulation technology in real-world projects across the automotive, aerospace, defense, and energy sectors.
